The shortcut everyone uses (and why it's a little wrong)

The mental trick most people reach for, trying to close that gap fast, is dividing by 1.6: 100 km/h feels like it should be about 62.5 mph, so that's what a lot of people carry around in their head. It's close. It's also consistently about 0.6% too high, because the real conversion factor is 1.609344, not 1.6.

That sounds like nothing until you see it compound. At 200 km/h, the 1.6 shortcut says 125 mph. The real number is 124.3 mph - not usually the difference that matters when you're eyeballing a speed limit, but exactly the kind of quiet rounding error that turns into a real one if it ever gets used for something that has to be right.
