Shoe sizing has no single formula that converts cleanly across countries. It's three different measuring traditions layered on top of each other. US and UK sizes are both counted in barleycorns (an old English unit, ⅓ inch), but start counting from different points, which is why men's sizes run one full size apart and women's run two. EU sizing counts in Paris points (⅔ cm) on a completely different scale. Every brand's last shifts the fit slightly, so treat this as a reliable starting point, not a guarantee. When in doubt, go by foot length in cm.

Even standard charts disagree by half a size. This isn't just brand variation. Reputable, brand-neutral size charts themselves differ on the EU and UK numbers for the same US size, typically by 0.5 to 1 full size, and the gap widens at the small and large ends of the range. Treat the numbers above as the most common convention, not a guarantee, and use foot length in centimetres as the one figure that doesn't shift between charts.

Common questions

What is a US men's size 9 in UK sizing?
A US men's 9 is a UK 8, and an EU 42.
What is a US women's size 8 in EU sizing?
A US women's 8 is an EU 39, and a UK 6.
Why don't shoe sizes convert with a single clean formula?
US and UK sizes both count in barleycorns (1/3 inch) but start counting from a different point, and EU sizes count in Paris points (2/3 cm) on an entirely different scale. On top of that, reputable size charts themselves don't fully agree. The EU or UK equivalent for a given US size can differ by half a size or more depending on the source, before a brand's own last is even considered.
