Most calculators wait until you already know your numbers. We'd rather start with what you're actually trying to do.

Want to be debt-free in 18 months? Tell the debt payoff planner that, and it works out the extra payment it actually takes to get there - not the usual way round, where you guess at a payment and see what happens. Aiming for a specific balance by a certain year? The future value calculator solves backward from that target instead of forward from a guess. Most tools hand you a number once you've already worked out your own inputs. We'd rather work out the inputs once you've told us the outcome.

That's not every tool here - a straight unit conversion has nothing to seek, and plenty of calculators, you already know exactly what to type in. But wherever the real question is "what do I need to do to hit X," not just "what happens if I do Y," that's the shape we build toward.

The reason that matters: a conversion has one right answer - an inch is 25.4 millimetres and always will be, so the only job is to be exact. A calculation is different. It depends on decisions you haven't made yet - whether you refinance, whether you pay extra, whether that offset account stays full - which is exactly why naming the outcome and working backward beats plugging in a guess and hoping.

So that is what we build toward more broadly. Every tool here starts from a real question someone is actually trying to answer. Then it shows the part that is not obvious from the headline number - the comparison, the assumption, or the cost that only appears once you see the whole picture.

That is the whole purpose, and it is an ongoing one. We keep finding questions where the honest answer takes more than one number, and we keep building tools to uncover them.

UnitMojo reads a plain sentence instead of two dropdowns. Type 180 lb to kg or how many oz in a cup and it answers straight away. It also shows every other unit in that category at once, so switching to a different one is a single tap rather than starting over.

The same instinct carried over once it became clear that a lot of real questions are not unit questions at all. "Is my offset account actually working?" and "Did that raise beat inflation?" are not conversions. But they deserve the same standard: a real answer, worked from the actual mechanics, not a rounded guess.

Nobody visits a converter for fun

That is the honest answer to who this is for. You are always mid-something. Mid-recipe, with a phone propped against a mixing bowl and a recipe written in grams. Mid-decision, with a listing open in another tab. Mid-argument, trying to work out whether that raise actually beat inflation. Mid-panic, the night before an exam.

Nobody browses this site. You arrive with a number that is in the way of something you were already doing. The only thing that matters is getting past it and back to what you were doing.

So that is the standard every tool is held to: answer the actual question, show the working so you can trust it, and get out of the way. Not "convert anything" or "calculate anything" - each tool here was built for a specific moment somebody was genuinely stuck in.

What we actually promise

Exact factors, not rounded guesses. An inch is 25.4mm because that's the legal international definition, not an approximation. Every conversion factor on this site is checked against authoritative sources and covered by an automated test that would fail if anyone, including us, ever got it wrong. That's not a marketing line, the test suite is real and it runs on every change.

Regional differences get flagged, not hidden. A cup is 236.59 mL in the United States, 250 mL in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, 284 mL under the old British imperial standard and 200 mL in Japan. A tablespoon is 15 mL almost everywhere and 20 mL in Australia. Those are not rounding differences, and most converters quietly pick one and say nothing. UnitMojo shows the alternatives the moment the word is ambiguous, whichever country you are cooking, building or borrowing in.

Numbers anchored to something real. A bare figure like "42,195" means nothing on its own. UnitMojo ties it to something you can picture - a marathon, a Big Mac, the height of a mountain. That way a result carries some sense of scale, not just digits.

What the calculators promise, specifically

Real mechanics, not a single formula. A loan with an offset account is not one equation - it is a month-by-month simulation of a balance that changes every day. A retirement projection that treats a career break as an actual input, not something folded into an average rate, needs to model each stage separately. Where the honest answer requires more than a formula, that is what gets built.

Sources named, not just claimed. Contribution-rate guidance links back to the actual regulator, not a summary of a summary - the ATO for Australia, The Pensions Regulator for the UK, the Canada Revenue Agency for Canada. The US gets the same honesty rather than a substitute source: no regulator there publishes a target savings rate, so the page says that plainly instead of borrowing a number from a fund manager and presenting it as official guidance. Where a figure is our own calculation rather than someone else's published number, the method is explained on the page, not hidden behind the result.

Not financial advice, said plainly. These tools show what the numbers do under the assumptions entered - they do not know your full situation, and they say so. A calculator that quietly implies more certainty than it has is worse than one that admits its limits.

What "checked" actually means here

A specific example rather than a general claim: the cups to tablespoons converter says 1 US cup is 16 US tablespoons, and also tells you that an Australian metric cup holds 12.5 Australian tablespoons.

Most converters publish the first number alone. It is correct, and it is wrong by 28% for anyone cooking from an Australian recipe, because Australia is the only country whose tablespoon is 20 mL rather than 15. The cup differs too: 236.59 mL in the United States, 250 mL in Australia and New Zealand, 284 mL in an older British recipe. We found this by checking our own pages against the standards rather than against other calculators, which is how a shared mistake survives.

The same standard runs through the rest of the site. Wind chill and heat index use the exact NWS and NOAA formulas, with their real validity ranges stated rather than stretched past where they mean anything.

The luggage checker starts from the common industry baseline. Individual airlines are added only where the carrier's own published policy could be verified, each shown with the date it was checked. That makes for a deliberately short list, rather than a long one padded with numbers we could not confirm. The turkey roasting time cites USDA guidance rather than a rounded rule of thumb.

What's still true, and what isn't yet

Most of these tools are new. Which ones got built was guided by research into what people search for, not by usage on this site. We do not have years of visitor data the way older sites do, and that is worth saying plainly.

What we can stand behind is the accuracy of what is here, and that every tool was built around a real situation rather than a generic checklist.

What we deliberately don't do

The converter runs entirely in your browser. The whole unit table ships with the page, so once it has loaded it keeps working with no connection at all. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, because there is nowhere for it to go.

That is an architectural choice rather than a policy, which is why it holds regardless of anything else we do. Two tools are necessarily exceptions and say so on their own pages: the currency converter fetches daily exchange rates, and the timezone tool needs the current time.

We also do not guess. Some units simply do not measure the same kind of thing - kilograms and litres, with no ingredient specified. When that happens, UnitMojo says so plainly rather than inventing a number that looks confident and is not.

Still a work in progress. New unit categories, reference charts, and regional coverage get added regularly. If something's missing or looks wrong, that's useful to know, not a criticism.
