This drywall calculator takes your wall and ceiling areas and returns sheet counts, joint compound, tape and screws. Ceilings carry a larger waste allowance than walls, because working overhead produces more offcuts and more broken sheets.
Divide the total area by the sheet area and round up, then add waste. A 4 by 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4 by 12 covers 48.
Longer sheets mean fewer joints, which means less taping and a flatter finished wall. They are also heavier and harder to handle alone, which is why 4 by 8 remains the default for anyone working without a lift.
Because overhead work produces more breakage and more awkward cuts around fixtures. Trade practice allows around 10% on walls and around 14% on ceilings, rising to 15% or more where the layout is complex.
Convention Waste percentages are trade practice, not a published standard. The calculator uses your figure, so adjust it if your own experience differs.
Roughly 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet for a three-coat finish, and about 500 feet of tape per 1,000 square feet. A 5 gallon bucket covers somewhere around 160 to 170 square feet through all three coats.
Finish level changes the compound quantity more than anything else. A Level 5 finish adds a skim coat over the whole surface and uses roughly half as much again as Level 4.

About 32 for a 4 by 8 sheet on walls, following the standard spacing of 16 inches in the field and 8 inches along the edges. Ceilings need closer spacing at 12 inches, so nearer 50 to 60 per sheet.
